Coming of age: Thebarton Aquatic Centre celebrates 100th adult swimming lesson participant
Thebarton Aquatic Centre has reached a meaningful milestone, supporting its 100th adult swimming participant since opening mid last year.
As of May, more than 100 adults were actively enrolled in the program at Thebarton. From complete beginners to those improving their technique, this community of adult learners is reshaping what swimming participation looks like across generations.
A life-saving skill at any age
Adult swimming lessons are about more than just learning strokes, they’re about building confidence, overcoming barriers, and creating a safer community. This is especially important in a state like South Australia, where access to water is a way of life. Thebarton’s adult program directly contributes to addressing the challenge of offering an inclusive space for adults of all ages - from 16 to over 60 - to gain vital water skills.
“What an incredible milestone for our centre and our community” said Daniel, Centre Manager. “Reaching 100 adult swimming lesson enrolments is a testament to the trust our community places in us and the growing confidence of individuals taking the plunge to learn a life-saving skill.”
“We are so proud to be creating a safe, supportive environment where adults feel empowered to learn, grow, and thrive in the water. A huge thank you to our amazing instructors and team for their dedication and passion.”
Swimming Instructor Lucy echoes this pride, “Every adult I meet in these lessons has a unique story; some are learning to swim for the very first time, others want connection and confidence. The way we help each participant is so personal and I’m incredibly proud of what we’re building here at Thebarton.”
Stories of strength, confidence, and community
Participants themselves say it best:
- “Great lessons! My teacher is patient and explains the techniques clearly. I feel more confident in the water now!” Felix
- “I started as a complete beginner with shoulder mobility issues. I’ve made amazing progress thanks to the supportive, patient, and funny instructors.” Mei
- “My husband and I started in the beginner’s class and we’re now in intermediate. We value the personalised feedback that helps us improve.” Jemma
